Notes from the road...Part III

The GPS harps like my grandmom - constant and whiny.

There are 3 GPS voices: man, woman, and child. ***I imagine a conference room where suits discuss the idea that a "family" will make the thing less annoying (as E would say, "EPIC fail").*** The child will often repeat one word 5 or 6 times urgently and loudly - usually speaking over the woman (mom would commiserate I'm sure). This is not enjoyable. As we have been on the same highway for the entirety of the trip, I am fairly certain whatever brat-face wants cannot be SO urgent as to warrant such behavior.

...I finally figure out the the kid's, "Ed HEEP" happens every time you go over the posted speed limit. Ah! Well, the annoyance would get me to slow down - or just not use the GPS...

Thoughts from the road...part II

My hands are surprisingly leathery. I am less alarmed then Elle or Vogue would have me be. They [my hands] show the age my face & figure do not. Lines cut by dyes, turpentine, chemicals and making crocodile my knuckles. Years of sewing, drawing, and serious playing stake their claim - writing the story a of a small, trivial life from wrists to fingernail.

As a child and still, my mom's hands held peace and comfort. Her story scrawls delicately on her skin, her veins blue and green pulsing upward.

There is an unexpected joy in the dryness of my hands allowing for their inspection and notation thoroughly - the unexpected joy of feeling connected to my mom.

[Later...]

This is the first time I have ever seen anyone drive with their LEFT FOOT. It looks slightly awkward - right leg between the front seats. I am quite impressed.

Riding through the South Korean countryside, I find it similarly different to The States. The highway boasts a steady traffic of cars & trucks; the trucks having been squashed. They are squarer, shorter, more compact. Billboards dot the peripheral with bright images. The symbols mean nothing to me - as if I have forgotten how to read. Directional signs hang overhead, their symbols odd but understandable. I am not able to make the subtle differences in most faces. Every vehicle looks to be driven by the same man only sometimes he wears glasses, sometimes a hat.

The scenery rolls past, homes grouped together. The homes in the first town have neon blue rooves, Home Depot orange in the second. The houses appear heaped together - piled laundry saving floor space.

There are a remarkable amount of sky scraping apartment and office buildings though we are in no city. Open spaces present watery farms and low-growing orchards. I imagine rice plants peeking through the flat water patties, and watch curiously farmers drive heavy and no doubt expensive farm equipment through wheel-high bogs. The water is clear and bright to my surprise and delight as I enjoy the reflections they realize.

There are changing but constant mountains in the distance. Sometimes we ride through a pass, but I never feel the incline or dissent. An hour and more outside of Seoul and it now feels rural. I am reminded of Vermont. The rolling mountains are healthy with a blanket of trees lush and strong. I begin to count shades of green distinct from one another, but the task is overwhelming.

The expanse opens to huge groups of apartment scrapers footed by rows & rows of long low greenhouses. They are instantly in the distance - a trick of this surprising country.

If I were to wake tomorrow in the future of 20 or 30 years, I believe it would inspire a very like feeling to my experience now ~ the feeling that everything, yet in some way nothing is familiar.

Thoughts from the road...part one...

Notes from the plane flying to the west coast (leg one):

The west has a stark & striking beauty from above. I see windswept mountains as stilled waves caught before they crash onto the beach. Occasional double-lanes [roads] sew the landscape together - tan seams on a chocolate expanse.

From above the clouds, canyons, and mountains are breath-taking. A river cuts the rock far below and the spotted crop circles announce man's green dominating presence.

It is a magnificent day. The sun so bright she burns onto the land and casts noir shadows, pulling the clouds up from the earth.

Seconds later and the clouds now mimic the mountains of a moment and 100s of miles ago...fluffy cotton ball rows rise and dissipate, the forgotten landscape peeking below.

The eternal vista has a contemplative and contenting effect. Beautiful and daunting, I am struck by the human commonality and our fleeting insignificance.

Arriving in S.Korea:

I arrive bleary-eyed and most certainly flat-tailed, sleeping through the dissent to be woken by a gentle touch down. This last 1/2 hour is the only shut-eye I allowed myself on the long leg of the journey. Best to arrive tired at 3 pm. When 7 or 8 rolls around I'll be exhausted. Exhaustion brushes away the time difference, filling the always rock hard beds with butterfly kisses and keeping The Sandman by your side for a much needed entire night.

The bus driver is listening to Korean music and it reminds me of Bollywood. The quick high-pitched tunes drift in and out of my awareness as background noise sometimes distinguishable.

May!

So, April ended with a quick trip to Boston. It was probably my favorite trip to Boston so far. I actually enjoyed myself...huh.

Boston & I still disagree about the importance of BREAKFAST and their beer selection (hello! Craft Brews? Where ARE you in Baaahston?), but alas, Boston is not Philly, and I just need to get over that...just other reasons not to ever move there.

Took this from the train (booked too late to fly, booOOoo), but love the pic. Maybe we will do something like this on our back wall...hmmm...

May brings the planting of a garden!
Happy HAPPY happinesssss :)
S built the beds as per Square Foot Gardening. We're trying that. It's fun. I love playing in the dirt. We also planted some things in pots. We'll do more of this as well, but only so much to do in one weekend.

Update! Bak Choi, Cukes, Wildflowers already up from seeds, some other starters looking good too ^_^

I found this picture too which is hilarious. It is from M & K's wedding. I figured no one reads this blog anyway, so whatever.
Of Note:
1. Looks like I'm not wearing any clothing - ha. I am, actually.
2. You can just barely see S in the bed. He LOVES it when I jump on the bed when he's in it...errrr...or NOT.
3. I love to jump on beds. In hotel rooms especially.
4. You can kinda see through my leg b/c it is moving. Cool.
